ウィリアムズ症候群は稀少遺伝病であり、7番染色体上の7q11.23領域における20個程度の遺伝子の欠失を原因とする。認知に関する理論やモデルに関するこの症候群の重要性は、15年ほど前にベルージ(Bellugi)・サボー(Sabo)・ベイド(Vaid)がウィリアムズ症候群は認知能力から言語が独立していることを示す範例になると主張したことに端を発する。詳しく述べると、ウィリアムズ症候群の患者は重度の精神遅滞であるにも関わらず「完全」な言語を使いこなす。最近の発見によってこの症候群における言語と特質のさらに複雑な関係を示すことが明らかになった。この特集号には互いに重なり合う3つの分野からの論文が収録されている。認知機能の発達と比較した言語機能の発達に関する論文、他の認知機能に関する論文、対人関係と人格に関する論文である。これらの論文を総合すると、遺伝的神経発達障害に関する研究を行うことで、持って生まれた遺伝的差異が幼児期から成人に至るまでの行動や情報処理戦略に影響を与える複雑な方式に関する理解が進むという重要性が明らかになる。本特集号がきっかけとなって、ウィリアムズ症候群やその他の遺伝的神経発達障害に関する遺伝子と発達の関係を基礎とした研究方法を基礎としたたな研究にを呼び起こすことを期待している。
